This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.
Part A: Curriculum music
This is about what we teach in lesson time, how much time is spent teaching music and any music qualifications or awards that pupils can achieve.
Harestock Primary School provides high-quality music education across the school, with pupils receiving 1 hour of music per week. The school follows the Hampshire Music Hub Scheme of Work, ensuring a structured and progressive curriculum. In the Early Years, the music curriculum is embedded within the continuous provision, allowing pupils to engage with music throughout their day.
In Years 3 and 4, pupils participate in the "Listen to Me" instrumental lessons, where they learn to play 6 different instruments over two years and perform to a live audience every term. This exposure to a variety of instruments and performance opportunities helps to develop their technical and expressive skills, including reading standard notation.
Children are assessed at the end of each term against the music domains. The music leader evaluates progress and identifies areas where CPD or developments to the music curriculum could be incorporated.
The school also places a strong emphasis on music in assemblies, where pupils are exposed to a diverse range of music from different times, traditions, musicians, and composers. This includes music from the Model Music Curriculum as well as music relevant to the school's catchment area, providing valuable cultural capital.
Furthermore, the school integrates singing across the curriculum, using songs to learn facts or music relevant to history and geography topics. This cross-curricular approach reinforces the constructive and expressive aspects of music.
